Practical Training and Assessment Internship (TPV)

Eligibility Requirements

Students may undertake the Practical Training and Assessment Internship (TPV) provided that they meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of 10 ECTS credits of professional training activities;
  • Internship start period: January 2026;
  • Internship duration: 500 hours;
  • 20 ECTS credits awarded by the University upon the regular completion of the TPV.

The Practical Training and Assessment Internship (TPV) is worth 20 ECTS credits, in addition to the 10 ECTS credits of professional training activities required within the Bachelor's Degree in Psychological Sciences and Techniques (L-24). Students holding a Bachelor's degree in the L-24 class that did not include these professional training activities may apply for recognition of other certified activities that meet the TPV requirements outlined below. Any credits still missing after the recognition process may be completed during the Master's Degree Programme, up to a maximum of 10 ECTS credits, in addition to the 120 ECTS credits required for the Master's degree. Students coming from degree classes other than L-24 are always required to complete the 10 ECTS credits of TPV-related professional training activities within the Master's Degree Programme, in addition to the 120 ECTS credits required for graduation.

Host Institution Requirements

Public and private organizations wishing to host trainees must meet the following requirements:

  • The organization, or a specific division within it, must carry out activities that include psychological functions and services;
  • The trainee must be given the opportunity to participate directly in activities considered fundamental to their future professional practice.

If the internship placement has not yet been accredited by the Lombardy Board of Psychologists (OPL), accreditation may be requested by following the procedure available at the relevant OPL webpage.

Professional Tutor Requirements

The TPV professional tutor must be a licensed psychologist registered in Section A of the Professional Register for at least three years. Tutors must maintain a substantial and ongoing professional relationship with the host institution, whether as employees, collaborators, or consultants, and must perform activities specifically related to the profession of psychologist, normally involving a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week.

If the professional tutor has not yet been accredited by the Lombardy Board of Psychologists (OPL), accreditation may be requested by following the procedure available on the relevant OPL webpage.

How to Identify a Professional Tutor

Students may directly contact host institutions and prospective professional tutors by consulting the list of accredited organizations available on the OPL website.

Internship Tutors for the Degree Programme

For the activation of the Practical Training and Assessment Internship (TPV) and its subsequent recognition upon completion, it is mandatory to follow the University’s official internship activation procedure, as outlined below.
Students are strongly advised to check the relevant deadlines and schedule with their Degree Programme and to begin identifying a suitable host organization well in advance.
Organizations that meet the requirements established by the applicable regulations must activate the internship with the University of Milan by following the online procedure available on the University website: entering into an internship agreement with the University (if one is not already in place) and subsequently activating the curricular internship through the submission of an individual training project (Traineeships and internships).
Once the agreement has been activated, the organization may complete the training project online. To do so, it must log in to the Company Portal and follow the path: Internship Management > Training Projects > Create New Training Project.
More specifically, the relevant sections of the training project must be completed as indicated below (copy and paste the text provided).

Internship Activities

The main activities assigned to trainees will include:

  • welcoming and receiving service users;
  • collection of clinical and personal history information;
  • discussion of clinical cases;
  • assessment of clinical needs and formulation of preliminary intervention hypotheses;
  • development of an interdisciplinary treatment plan;
  • identification of appropriate professionals and referral pathways based on the needs expressed;
  • study of diagnostic manuals;
  • planning interventions for minors and specialist support activities within schools;
  • observation of clinical interviews conducted by the professional tutor;

During the internship, trainees will learn how to prepare a psychological and neuropsychological report for both diagnostic and research purposes. They will also develop key transferable skills, particularly communication and interpersonal skills required for working within multidisciplinary teams in hospital and community healthcare settings.

Educational and Career Development Objectives

By the end of the internship, trainees should have acquired the following professional psychological competencies and skills:

  • understanding the principles and approaches involved in conducting an initial clinical interview;
  • collecting psychological and neuropsychological case histories and integrating them with information relating to organic diseases;
  • acquiring introductory tools for neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation planning;
  • developing skills in the analysis and interpretation of clinical cases;

More specifically, the primary objective of the internship is to develop the fundamental professional competencies required to:

  • carry out prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, and support interventions in the field of neuropsychology aimed at individuals, groups, social organizations, and communities;
  • conduct assessments and interventions designed to promote, maintain, and restore physical and mental health, working both independently and in collaboration with other professionals.

In line with the characteristics of the host organization, trainees will have the opportunity to acquire foundational competencies in neuropsychological assessment, diagnostic processes, psychological history-taking interviews, and rehabilitation interventions.

Internship for the Recovery of Undergraduate Training Credits

Only for training projects activated to recover internship credits missing from the Bachelor's Degree, the wording: "Undergraduate Internship Credit Recovery" must be entered in the "Company Department/Placement Area" section of the training project.

Trainees may download the following documents from this section:

  • the Attendance Record, which must be completed on a daily basis;
  • the Internship Logbook, which must be validated by the host organization's professional tutor at the end of the internship in order to gain access to the Practical Assessment Examination.

Completion of the Internship

Once the Practical Training and Assessment Internship (TPV) has been completed and the required number of hours has been achieved, trainees must initiate the procedure for submitting the required documentation and obtaining the registration of the corresponding ECTS credits in their academic record, as outlined below:

  • completion of the required documentation;
  • signature and approval by the professional tutor;
  • submission of the documentation to the Degree Programme Office.

Practical Assessment Examination (PPV)

The Practical Assessment Examination (PPV) consists of a single oral examination designed to assess the candidate's ability to critically reflect on the overall internship experience and the activities carried out, including aspects related to professional legislation and ethics. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to adopt a professional approach grounded in theoretical models and evidence-based practice. The examination also serves as a further assessment of the professional and technical competencies acquired through the internship and throughout the entire educational pathway. The PPV is evaluated by an examination board composed on a parity basis. Specifically, the board consists of at least four members: half of the members are university professors appointed by the Department responsible for the Degree Programme, one of whom serves as Chair;
the remaining members are appointed by the National Council of the Order of Psychologists, following consultation with the relevant professional associations. These members must have been registered with the Professional Register for at least five years. At the conclusion of the PPV, students receive a pass/fail assessment. A positive assessment is required in order to proceed to the discussion of the Master's thesis.
